Balance des Invisibles, Studios Lenikus, Vienna, AT, 2015

Running, jumping, punching and sweating; ork with the female body is at the centre of this installation – yet the body itself remains absent. Following a stay in Tehran, the artist Marlies Pöschl invited musician Manuel Riegler to collaborate on this installation, which interrogates religious and politically motivated constructions of visibility.
Using field recordings from (single sex) sport complexes in Tehran, Riegler created multilayered acoustic narrations, which breathe life into Pöschl’s video images of abandoned spaces. These rigorous documentary images are imbued with an invisible physical presence somewhere between the quotidian, the uncanny, and erotica.

Visitors to this three-channel installation developed for the donaufestival navigate invisible spaces whose boundaries remain in the dark. As with her previous works, Pöschl explores the tension between image and sound in order to address the constitution of speaker positions and identities. The duo play with how desires are linked to images. While concealment is enhanced to the point of invisibility, it also eludes the voracity for images of the other.
